An abortion is an induced and sudden termination of pregnancy. There are two types of abortions, Medical and Surgical. The medical method involves taking two pills within 24 hours of each other thus killing the fetus, but this method is usually done during 3-7 weeks of pregnancy. The surgical method, on the other hand involves a doctor removing the inner lining of the womb, either manual vacuum aspiration or dilatation suction curettage. Both of these methods use a suction process. With MVA (manual vacuum aspiration) a handheld device is used, while DC (or dilatation suction curettage) is done using a suction machine and other tools. The manual vacuum aspiration method can only be carried out during the first ten weeks of pregnancy, while dilatation suction curettage can be done only between week 5 and the start of week 14. The method involves separating the fetus into small parts and the parts are then sucked up by the machine. So you can see how brutally the fetus is terminated and why I think abortion must be banned. Abortion is also an act which violates human rights, technically because the baby in the mother’s womb also has the same right to life that we do. In 2003, there were approximately around forty-two million abortions per year globally, or 115,000 every day. My schedule typically involves three days of school, and since I live close to school, I tend to go home immediately after class. I live with my parents and I like to cook, so most of my meals are taken at home. However if I am kept in school, sometimes I will bring packed lunches if there are leftovers or buy a sandwich from the school cafeteria. My parents usually make most of the food decisions as they do the grocery shopping, but I will make requests for certain food items if I want. I live a typically sedentary lifestyle as I am not very physically active, but I do take 10 minute walks with my dog regularly. I eat out occasionally at restaurants with friends and have alcohol once a while. I also tend to stay away from fast food but I will indulge in a sinful meal or desserts once in a while. I do eat out of convenience sometimes, like cook instant noodles or order pizza when food runs out at home. As I come from a Chinese family, rice is a daily staple in our meals and it is usu ally accompanied by a meat and vegetable dish, making it a well-rounded diet. I typically eat 1-2 meals a day as I either wake up around lunch time or leave the house right after washing up in the morning.2. I would give myself a rating of 6 for a varied diet. I am not a picky eater, but my family mostly buys the same types of vegetables, namely broccoli, carrots and tomatoes. I do not have the habit of eating fruits because my family does not buy fruits often. There is usually a variety of meat in the house like chicken, pork, beef and fish. I eat mainly white basmanti rice and whole wheat bread, but because my family frequently makes our own noodles, we normally use all-purpose flour, limiting our intake of whole grains. I do not have the habit of drinking milk or water as I prefer to drink tea. I have butter, olive, and sunflower oil on hand at home so I normally use that to cook. This shows that I eat some variety of meat and vegetables but lack a range in grain products, fruit and vegetables, and milk and alternatives.3. I would give myself a rating of 6 for a well chosen diet. My family normally incorporates vegetables like broccoli and cabbage in every meal but we do not regularly eat fruits like bananas and avocados. This limits our variety of fruits and vegetables, meaning that we do not take in as many nutrients and minerals as we should. However, Chinese cuisine typically steams or stir fries vegetables so that is healthier than deep frying. Since I eat mainly white basmanti rice or whole wheat bread, the low glycaemic index gives me a more balanced level of energy and basmanti rice gives 20% more fibre than other types of brown rice, helping me feel full without having to eat as much carbohydrates. But I feel that I should include more whole grain products as it is better for me. I also eat a variety of meats from chicken to fish and the meat is usually braised or steamed, making it healthy as lean meats can be used and there is no need for added f at. My family makes a healthier choice by using unsaturated fats like olive and sunflower oil when cooking and we do not greasy foods very often. Sadly, I do not have the habit of drinking milk as I prefer to drink tea, and I do not eat cheese or yogurt often, limiting my intake of nutrients like calcium and protein.4. I scored 43.78% of calories from fat, which puts me above the recommended percent of 20-30% fat in my diet. This could be due to eat regular cut of meats rather than opting for lean cuts, or from the processed meats from the cold cut submarine that I ate outside. The software program, commonly referred to as AR, is designed to motivate students to read and to assess their overall understanding of the books that they are reading. The program was developed by Renaissance Learning Inc., which has several other programs closely related to the Accelerated Reader program. Although the program is designed for student’s grades 1-12, Accelerated Reader is especially popular in elementary schools across the country. The programs main purpose is to determine whether or not the student has actually read the book. The program is designed to build and encourage students to become lifelong readers and learners. In addition, teachers can use the program to motivate their students by providing rewards that correspond to the number of AR points earned by the student. Accelerated Reader is essentially a three-step program. Students first read a book (fiction or nonfiction), magazine, textbook, etc. Students may read individually, as a whole group, or in small group settings. Students then individually take the quiz that corresponds to what they just read. AR quizzes are assigned a point value based on the overall level of the book. Teachers often set weekly, monthly, or yearly goals for the number of points they require their students to earn. Students who score below 60% on the quiz do not earn any points. Students who score 60% - 99% receive partial points. Students who score 100% receive full points. Teachers then use the data generated by these quizzes to motivate students, monitor progress, and target instruction. Internet-Based Accelerated Reader is Internet-based meaning that it can be accessed easily on any computer that has Internet access.
